
Mumbai, India: A massive fire engulfed a seven-story residential building in Mumbai’s Goregaon area in the early hours of Friday, killing seven people, including two minors, and injuring over 40 others.
The fire broke out around 3 am at Jay Sandesh building in Goregaon West, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) official said. As many as 30 residents were rescued from the terrace and various floors of the ground-plus-seven structure, the official said.
The blaze was brought under control after two hours of firefighting operations. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
The injured have been admitted to various hospitals in Mumbai, including Cooper Hospital, Goregaon Hospital, and Jogeshwari Trauma Centre. Some of the injured are in critical condition.
The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, has expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased and wrote on Twitter as “Pained by the loss of lives due to a fire mishap in Mumbai’s Goregaon. Condolences to the bereaved families. I pray that the injured recover soon. Authorities are providing all possible assistance to those affected. An ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000”
The Maharashtra Chief Minister, Eknath Shinde, has also announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 5 lakh for the next of kin of each deceased and Rs. 1 lakh for each injured person.
The fire has raised concerns about the safety of buildings in Mumbai. Many buildings in the city are old and dilapidated, and they do not have proper fire safety measures in place. The authorities have ordered an inquiry into the fire and have promised to take steps to improve fire safety in Mumbai.
