Second Gymnasium Collapse in Northeastern China Sparks Public Alarm

Beijing, Nov 7: In another tragic incident, a gymnasium in the northeastern province of Heilongjiang, China, collapsed on Monday night, causing significant public concern, particularly due to its proximity to a similar incident earlier this year.

The collapse resulted in three casualties and one person seriously injured, and the victims’ details are yet to be disclosed. Reports suggest that children were inside the gymnasium when it caved in.

Rescuers were seen searching through the snow-covered concrete rubble to find survivors.

The Yuecheng Gym Stadium, located in Jiamusi city, experienced the second-floor collapse. Authorities have already detained an individual responsible for the gymnasium.

It remains unclear what caused the collapse.

The incident has generated comparisons with a previous gymnasium collapse in the same province earlier this year.

In July, a school gymnasium in Qiqihar city collapsed, leading to the tragic death of 11 individuals. Authorities attributed the collapse to the weight of construction materials left behind by contractors.

Alarmed citizens are now calling for answers and accountability, particularly as there were checks carried out on buildings following the Qiqihar disaster.

The incident has garnered significant attention on Chinese social media platforms, with users expressing frustration about the safety of public facilities in the region. The collapse has raised concerns about the quality and safety of construction projects.

While authorities have not disclosed whether the Yuecheng Gym Stadium had undergone inspections after the previous collapse, locals are urging officials to conduct further safety inspections on large public facilities in the province. They hope that such measures can prevent similar tragedies in the future.

Heilongjiang, China’s northernmost province, is currently experiencing severe weather conditions due to a sudden cold snap. Blizzard conditions have led to school closures and transportation disruptions, including flight and train cancellations.

Authorities have advised residents to stay indoors, issuing severe weather warnings. State media has also cautioned of more blizzard conditions and the potential for icy roads and downed power lines in the region.
