Breaking News: A Russian court on Wednesday sentenced Russian journalist Marina Ovsyannikova to 8.5 years in prison in absentia on charges of spreading false information about the Russian military. Ovsyannikova is accused of spreading false information about the Russian military in a live broadcast on Channel One, the state-owned television channel, in March 2022.
Ovsyannikova had burst into the live broadcast holding a sign that said “No to war” and “Don’t believe the propaganda.” She was subsequently fired from her job at Channel One and arrested. Ovsyannikova fled Russia in April 2022 and is currently living in exile.
The sentencing of Ovsyannikova has been condemned by international human rights groups. Amnesty International called the sentencing “a travesty of justice” and said that it was a “clear attempt to intimidate and silence anyone who dares to speak out against the war in Ukraine
Since the start of the war in Ukraine, the Russian government has cracked down on independent media and has forced many journalists to flee the country.
