London, Nov 3: Prime Minister Rishi Sunak engaged in a unique “in conversation” session with billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk during this week’s artificial intelligence summit.

The discussion covered a broad range of topics, from advanced robots to the potential impact of AI on society.

Musk, known for his investments in AI companies and utilization of AI in his Tesla autonomous vehicles, voiced concerns about AI’s potential threat to society and human existence.

He highlighted safety concerns, especially regarding humanoid robots, emphasizing that they could pose risks humans couldn’t easily escape.

Responding to Musk’s remarks, Prime Minister Sunak, who is keen to promote tech investment in the UK, commented, “You’re not selling this.” Sunak’s enthusiasm for technology is well-documented, as he previously lived in California, home to Silicon Valley.

The event, attended by invited guests from the tech industry, took place in central London’s Lancaster House. Interestingly, TV cameras were not allowed inside, and footage was released by Downing Street. Some reporters were present but were instructed not to ask questions.

During the conversation, Musk mentioned the potential benefits of AI, suggesting that an AI friend could be a great companion for someone with difficulty making friends.

The duo also agreed on the positive impact AI could have on learning, with Musk describing it as the “best and most patient tutor” for young people.

However, the discussion also delved into the potential negative consequences of AI on traditional jobs. Musk stated, “We are seeing the most destructive force in history here,” and speculated that there might come a point where no jobs are necessary as AI could handle everything. He acknowledged the challenges of finding meaning in life in a future where AI could replace many jobs.

The conversation did not lead to new announcements on how AI will be employed and regulated in the UK, except for the Prime Minister’s mention of using AI to improve the government’s website.

Elon Musk’s presence at the summit initially raised questions, with Musk sharing a cartoon parody on his platform X (formerly known as Twitter) hours before the event, satirizing an “AI Safety Summit.” Despite the initial uncertainties, the discussion appeared to be a fruitful exchange between Sunak and Musk.

The Prime Minister, in particular, appeared comfortable in the company of the controversial tech billionaire, whom he praised as a “brilliant innovator and technologist.” As AI continues to shape the future, both Sunak and Musk aim to contribute to shaping the path forward.
