The Norwegian author and playwright Jon Fosse has been awarded the 2023 Nobel Prize in Literature. The Swedish Academy announced the prize on Thursday, citing Fosse’s “innovative plays and prose which give voice to the unsayable.”
Fosse is one of Norway’s most celebrated writers, with a body of work that spans over four decades. He is best known for his plays, which have been translated into over fifty languages and performed around the world. His prose fiction is also highly acclaimed, and his novel Septology VI-VII was shortlisted for the 2022 International Booker Prize.
Fosse’s writing is characterized by its lyrical and poetic language, its exploration of themes such as love, loss, and memory, and its focus on the inner lives of his characters. His plays are often spare and minimalist, but they are also deeply moving and emotionally resonant.
In his citation for the prize, the Swedish Academy praised Fosse’s “unique and visionary voice” and his ability to “create a deep and profound connection with his audience.” The Academy also noted that Fosse’s work “has had a profound influence on contemporary Scandinavian literature.”
Fosse is the first Norwegian writer to win the Nobel Prize in Literature since Knut Hamsun in 1920. He is also the first playwright to win the prize since Harold Pinter in 2005.
In a statement released after the announcement, Fosse said that he was “honored and humbled” to receive the prize. He also thanked his family, friends, and colleagues for their support over the years.
