Nobel Peace Prize 2023: Awarded to Jailed Iranian Rights Activist

Oslo, Norway: Jailed Iranian rights campaigner Narges Mohammadi was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee said Mohammadi was chosen for her “outstanding bravery and her tireless efforts to promote human rights and democracy in Iran.”

Mohammadi is a co-founder of the Center for Human Rights in Iran, a non-governmental organization that works to promote human rights in Iran. She has been imprisoned several times for her work, and she is currently serving a 10-year sentence for charges that include “assembly and collusion against national security” and “propaganda against the system.”

The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded annually to the person or organization that has done the most to “promote fraternity between nations, the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses.”

The Nobel Committee said Mohammadi’s work is “in the best tradition of the Nobel Peace Prize.”

“She has shown courage and determination in her fight for human rights and democracy, even at great personal cost,” the committee said in a statement.

Mohammadi is the second Iranian woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize, after Shirin Ebadi in 2003.

The award of the Nobel Peace Prize to Mohammadi is a significant victory for human rights activists in Iran and around the world. It is also a powerful message of support for the Iranian people, who are struggling for freedom and democracy.
