In a recent episode of Triggernometry, a YouTube channel hosted by comedians Konstantin Kisin and Francis Foster, Neil deGrasse Tyson, the famous astrophysicist and science communicator, exploded during a debate about trans women competing in women’s sports.

The debate began when Kisin asked Tyson about his thoughts on the issue. Tyson said that he believes that trans women have an unfair advantage over cisgender women in sports because of their biological sex.

Foster then challenged Tyson, arguing that there is no scientific consensus on this issue. He also pointed out that there are many trans women who are not as physically strong as cisgender women.

Tyson became increasingly agitated as the debate went on. He accused Foster of being “ignorant” and “dishonest.” He also said that Foster was “misrepresenting the science.”

The debate ended with Tyson storming off the set.

Tyson’s comments have been met with widespread criticism, with many people calling them transphobic and harmful.

Criticism of Tyson’s comments

One of the main criticisms of Tyson’s comments is that they are scientifically inaccurate. Trans women are not men who have mutilated their genitals. Trans women are women who were assigned male at birth but who identify as women.

Another criticism of Tyson’s comments is that they are harmful. Transphobic language and attitudes can lead to violence and discrimination against trans people.

Defense of Tyson’s comments

Some people have defended Tyson’s comments, arguing that he is simply stating the scientific facts. They argue that trans women do have a biological advantage over cisgender women in sports.

Others have defended Tyson’s comments on the grounds of free speech. They argue that Tyson has the right to express his opinion, even if it is unpopular.

Ultimately, it is up to each individual to decide whether or not they agree with Tyson’s comments. However, it is important to be aware of the potential harms of transphobic language and attitudes.
