Iraqi PM Visits Iran in Bid to Address Gaza Crisis Amidst Israel’s Aggression

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani embarked on a regional tour on Monday, starting with his visit to Tehran, Iran. The primary goal of this regional tour is to address the ongoing developments in Gaza amidst Israel’s persistent aggression.

During his visit to Iran, Sudani met with Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The visit is intended to prevent Iraq from being drawn into a possible regional conflict as a result of Israel’s brutal war on Gaza.

Furthermore, Sudani carries a message from the United States, emphasizing that Tehran should deter Iraqi militias aligned with Iran from launching attacks on military bases that host US and international coalition personnel.

This message follows US Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s unannounced visit to Iraq, during which he met with Sudani in Baghdad. Blinken emphasized the US’s commitment to protecting its forces in Iraq while making it clear that they do not seek conflict with Iran.

In a joint press conference with Iranian President Raisi in Tehran, the Iraqi Prime Minister criticized the international community’s failure to fulfill its responsibilities toward the people of Gaza, who have been under attack by Israel since October 7.

He condemned the systematic killings and atrocities in Gaza and the West Bank while urging the international community to take decisive action.

President Raisi, in agreement with Sudani, called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, an end to Israeli airstrikes, and the provision of essential assistance to the people of Gaza.

Supreme Leader Khamenei expressed his appreciation for Iraq’s firm stance in supporting the people of Gaza and highlighted the importance of increasing political pressure from the Muslim world on the US and Israel to halt the ongoing massacres and protect Gaza’s residents.

Khamenei also suggested that there was evidence of American involvement in managing the conflict from its early days.

The situation in Gaza remains a significant concern, and these diplomatic efforts aim to alleviate the suffering and protect the rights of the Palestinian people.

The international community is watching closely as regional leaders work towards peace in the midst of escalating tensions.
