Bengaluru, October 4, 2023: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has said that his government is considering an increase in pension for senior citizens. The increase, if implemented, could come into effect after the next state budget is announced.
“We are committed to the welfare of senior citizens,” Siddaramaiah said. “We are considering an increase in pension for them. A decision on this will be taken in the next budget.”
The current pension for senior citizens in Karnataka is Rs 1,000 per month. An increase to Rs 2,000 would be a significant boost for the state’s elderly population.
The announcement of a potential increase in pension for senior citizens has been welcomed by many. “This is a very good move,” said one senior citizen. “The current pension is not enough to cover our basic expenses. An increase to Rs 2,000 would be a great help.”
Another senior citizen said, “I am very happy to hear this. I have been struggling to make ends meet with the current pension. An increase to Rs 2,000 would give me some breathing space.”
The Karnataka government is expected to announce its next budget in March 2024. It remains to be seen whether the government will implement the proposed increase in pension for senior citizens.
- The increase in pension would benefit over 30 lakh senior citizens in Karnataka.
- The state government has allocated Rs 35,410 crore in the current budget for social security schemes, including the pension for senior citizens.
- The Chief Minister has also said that the state government is considering providing free travel in government buses to senior citizens.
