China Includes Arunachal Pradesh and Aksai Chin in its Recent Map Release

China officially released the 2023 edition of its standard map, which shows the Arunachal Pradesh state and the Aksai Chin region as part of its territory. The 2023 edition of China’s standard map was officially released on Monday and launched on the website of the standard map service hosted by the Ministry of Natural Resources, the state-run Global Times said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
Reason for China’s Claims: China claims Arunachal Pradesh and Aksai Chin as part of its territory
- According to history, China has claimed Arunachal Pradesh Since the 1950s, based on this claim, they have argued that Arunachal Pradesh was part of Tibet before the British took control of it in the 19th century.
- Arunachal Pradesh is a northeastern state of India that China claims as part of its territory, and China calls Arunachal Pradesh South Tibet. India has administered the Arunachal Pradesh state since 1950, and it has been part of India since 1972.
- Aksai Chin is a high-altitude plateau in the western part of the Himalayas. China controls the Aksai Chin, but India claims it is part of the Union territory of Ladakh. The two countries fought a war over the Aksai Chin in 1962.
- The Aksai Chin is strategically important to China because it provides the road link between Xinjiang and Tibet. It is also important to the Chinese military.
The inclusion of Arunachal Pradesh and Aksai Chin is a reminder of the ongoing dispute between China and India, and these situations express that China is not yet ready to resolve the border disputes with India, which leads to further tensions in the nation. The two leaders agreed with their direct officials in their countries to work on expeditious disengagement along the LAC. The tensions have been high since June 2020, when the two countries clashed in the eastern Ladakh Galwan valley. It has not been stopped by China, and it has brought a new dispute by including Arunachal Pradesh and Aksai Chin in their standard map.
