Poland’s President to Announce Prime Minister Decision Amidst Post-Election Uncertainty
Poland’s President, Andrzej Duda, is set to reveal his choice for the position of prime minister on Monday evening, ending a period of uncertainty following the ruling nationalists’ loss of their parliamentary majority in the October 15 election.
Duda, an ally of the ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party, had previously pledged to give the largest single party the first opportunity to form a government.
However, despite PiS securing the most seats with 194 out of 460 in the lower chamber, it is unlikely to find a coalition partner. Instead, a coalition of pro-European Union opposition parties is expected to form the next government with a combined 248 seats.
The pro-EU groups have urged Duda not to delay his appointment, expressing readiness to establish a cabinet led by Civic Coalition (KO) leader Donald Tusk.
Duda’s consultations with the parties that secured seats in parliament have revealed two serious candidates for leading the next government: the outgoing PiS Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and Donald Tusk. While the likelihood of PiS forming a parliamentary majority is low, they have not ruled it out entirely.
If Morawiecki is appointed by Duda to form a government and fails to secure a vote of confidence in parliament, the chamber will be tasked with appointing another prime minister.
