Armed Jailbreak in Guinea Leaves Nine Dead, Former President Briefly Freed

At least 9 killed in Guinea armed jailbreak on Saturday

CONAKRY, Nov 6: An armed jailbreak in Guinea on Saturday resulted in the death of at least nine individuals, according to a statement from the Ministry of Justice on Monday.

The incident briefly freed former military ruler Moussa Dadis Camara and three other officials from a central prison.

The ministry’s provisional country-wide assessment revealed that nine bodies were discovered, including three assailants and four members of Guinea’s defense force.

Six others are receiving treatment for gunshot wounds in the hospital.

Camara and others have been on trial since last year, facing accusations of orchestrating a stadium massacre and mass rape by Guinean security forces during a pro-democracy rally on September 28, 2009, in which 150 people were killed.

Camara has denied responsibility for the atrocities, attributing them to errant soldiers.
