Travis King, a US soldier who recently made headlines by fleeing from South to North Korea and subsequently being returned to the United States last month, is reportedly facing a series of charges, including desertion, solicitation and possession of explicit images involving a child, and assault against fellow soldiers.
Travis King, a reconnaissance specialist, made an illegal entry into North Korea in July while on a guided tour of a border village. After several months of uncertainty, Pyongyang released him without providing specific details about the incident.
Although the charges have not been officially announced, it appears that King is confronted with a total of eight charges, according to reports from Reuters news agency, which initially broke the story.
The 23-year-old could potentially face severe penalties for the charge of desertion alone, given his unauthorized crossing into North Korea.
King is also accused of engaging in various forms of misconduct before his escape to North Korea, which include an attempted escape from US military custody in October 2022.
Among the allegations, he is accused of soliciting a Snapchat user in July 2023 to produce child pornography, as well as possession of such material.
King’s mother, Claudine Gates, has appealed for her son to be presumed innocent as the legal process unfolds.
Before his unusual journey to North Korea, Pvt. King was on active duty with the US Army, stationed in South Korea as part of a rotational deployment. His decision to cross into North Korea occurred after he had served two months in detention in South Korea on charges of assaulting two individuals and damaging a police vehicle. He was released from custody on July 10, just eight days before his unauthorized entry into North Korea.
Swedish officials played a key role in facilitating King’s return, bringing him to the border between North Korea and China. Despite the attention this case has garnered, many questions remain unanswered about his treatment in North Korea, the motivations behind his flight to the country, and why North Korea chose to release him.
