11th October: Second Earthquake Hits Afghanistan again

Oct 11, Afghanistan: A Large earthquake happened in Afghanistan again, just a few days after a powerful one killed over 1,000 people in the same area. This new earthquake was as strong as the last one and occurred in the morning.

A magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck western Afghanistan on Wednesday,ย the US Geological Survey says, hitting an area where more than 2,000 people were killed after a similar tremor at the weekend. The quake occurred at a shallow depth at around 05:10 am local time (00:40 GMT), with its epicentre about 29 kilometres north of the city of Herat, the USGS says

The center of the earthquake was about 17 miles north of a city called Herat. We don’t know how bad it is yet, but many people are already sleeping outside because their homes were destroyed by the previous earthquake.

There’s also a shortage of things like blankets and food. The earthquake from a few days ago hit a place called Zindajan, which is a rural area about 25 miles from Herat.

โ€œWhen my body started shaking I realized it was another quake,โ€ said Nadar, 52, according to nytimes

People thought that the earthquake on Wednesday wouldn’t be as bad because the buildings in Herat City are made of concrete, which is stronger than mud-brick buildings in the areas that were hit hardest on Saturday. Many people were sleeping outside to stay safe.

At Herat’s hospital, many ambulances were coming and going, bringing in lots of injured people.

The pictures from there show that many houses were not strong enough to survive such a big earthquake and were completely destroyed.

The two earthquakes that have hit Afghanistan in the past week are a reminder of the country’s vulnerability to natural disasters. Afghanistan is located in a seismically active region, and earthquakes are common.

The two earthquakes have caused widespread damage and loss of life. The Afghan government is struggling to cope with the aftermath of the earthquakes

Afghanistan often experiences earthquakes, especially in the Hindu Kush mountains, because it’s close to where two big pieces of the Earth’s crust meet.
