UK Puts Asylum Seekers Back on Barge Because of Bacteria

LONDON, Oct 10: The UK has decided to use a barge on its southern coast once again to house asylum seekers. This comes two months after they had to remove people from the barge because the water on it was found to be contaminated with legionella bacteria. The government had initially used the barge as a way to save money on housing migrants.

Now, after safety tests, the government is sending letters to asylum seekers telling them they will be moved to the barge. It’s important to note that asylum seekers don’t have a choice in where they are placed.

The government is trying to reduce the cost of housing migrants in hotels, which is currently costing £8 million ($9.8 million) per day. However, critics have criticized the barge, which can house up to 500 men, calling it inhumane and comparing it to a prison ship.

The barge is part of the UK’s plan to prevent illegal migration by people crossing the English Channel from France on small boats. Additionally, the government is testing a separate plan in the Supreme Court to deport these migrants to Rwanda.
