
Beijing, China – Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Monday, October 9, 2023, that US-China relations impact the “destiny of mankind” and that the two countries should work together to build a “world of greater stability and prosperity.”
Xi made the remarks during a meeting with US Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and his delegation at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.
Schumer is the highest-ranking US official to visit China since October 2018. His visit comes at a time of heightened tensions between the two countries over issues such as trade, Taiwan, and human rights.

Xi said that China and the United States have a “fundamental common interest” in maintaining peace and stability in the world. He also said that the two countries should work together to address global challenges such as climate change and economic recovery.
“How China and the United States get along with each other in the face of a world of change and turmoil will determine the future and destiny of mankind, China-US ties are the most important bilateral relationship in the world. I have said many times, including to several presidents, that we have 1,000 reasons to improve China-US relations, but not one reason to ruin them. China and the United States must demonstrate the broadmindedness, vision and responsibility of major countries, enhancing the well-being of the two peoples and promoting progress of human society, Relations between China and the United States have had many ups and downs, But the general direction has been forward, The world is developing and times are changing, but the historical logic of peaceful coexistence between China and the United States has not changed.”

U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer urged China to support Israel after deadly attacks by Hamas, adding he was “disappointed” that Beijing showed “no sympathy” for the country over the weekend.
The two countries are the two largest economies in the world, and they have a responsibility to work together to address global challenges, it remains to be seen whether the two countries can overcome their differences and build a more cooperative relationship.
