Jerusalem, Israel – Smoke balloons filled the sky over southern Israel on Monday as Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip continued to fire rockets.
The Israeli military said it intercepted dozens of rockets, but some managed to get through, causing damage to property.
The violence comes as tensions between Israel and the Palestinians have escalated in recent weeks.
Smoke balloons
Smoke balloons are a relatively new tactic used by Hamas militants. They are made from large balloons filled with helium and attached to a small incendiary device.
When the balloons are released, they float across the border into Israel and the incendiary device ignites, starting fires.
The smoke balloons have caused significant damage to crops and property in southern Israel. They have also caused health problems for residents, as the smoke can irritate the eyes and throat.
Israeli airstrikes
The Israeli military has responded to the smoke balloons and rocket fire with airstrikes on Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip.
The airstrikes have killed dozens of Palestinians, including civilians.
