October 3, 2023: A 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal on Tuesday, October 3, 2023, at 14:51 IST. The epicenter of the earthquake was located in Khaptad National Park in Doti District, about 400 kilometers west of the capital city of Kathmandu. Strong tremors were felt across Nepal and in neighboring North India, including in the cities of Delhi, Lucknow, and Kanpur.
According to the National Centre for Seismology in India, the earthquake was caused by a thrust fault, which occurs when one plate of rock slides over another. The Indian Plate is slowly moving under the Eurasian Plate, and the earthquake was caused by the release of built-up stress along the fault line.
Rescue and relief teams have been deployed to the affected areas to assist with search and rescue operations and to provide relief to those who have been displaced. The Government of Nepal has also announced financial assistance to the families of the victims.
The earthquake occurred along the Himalayan fault line, where the Indian Plate is slowly sliding under the Eurasian Plate. This region is prone to earthquakes, and Nepal has experienced several major earthquakes in the past century, including the devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake in 2015.
