October 2, 2023, Nanded, Maharashtra, India: At least 24 people, including 12 infants,Β 7 children, and 5 adults died at a government hospital in Nanded in Maharashtra in a span of 24 hours, officials said on Monday.
The deaths occurred at the Nanded Civil Hospital, a major government hospital in the city. Officials said that the cause of death is still under investigation, but they suspect that it may be due to a combination of factors, including infections, malnutrition, and underlying medical conditions.
“We are shocked and saddened by the loss of life,” said Dr. Prashant Gaikwad, Superintendent of the Nanded Civil Hospital. “We are working with the government to investigate the cause of death and to take steps to prevent such tragedies from happening in the future.”
Rahul Gandhi, leader of the Indian National Congress party, took to Twitter to express his condolences and demand accountability for the deaths at the Nanded hospital. He wrote:
“The news of death of 24 people, including 12 newborns, due to shortage of medicines in the government hospital of Nanded, Maharashtra is extremely sad. I express my deepest condolences to all the families. The BJP government spends thousands of crores of rupees on its publicity, but there is no money for medicines for children? In the eyes of BJP, the lives of the poor have no value.”
On the death of 24 patients in Dr Shankarrao Chavan Medical College and Hospital in Nanded, Shiv Sena (UBT) Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut says, “
… The health condition of Maharashtra has always been on the better side but for the last 1 year, in a way all the government departments of Maharashtra are working, neither the Health Minister is concerned, nor the doctors are working, and no one has any control. The health department is the most neglected department in Maharashtra.” – Ani wrote on Twitter
A team of doctors from the state government has been sent to Nanded to investigate the deaths. The team is expected to submit its report within a week.
The deaths have raised concerns about the quality of healthcare in government hospitals in Maharashtra. The state has a large number of government hospitals, but many of them are understaffed and lack resources.
The Maharashtra government has announced that it will provide financial assistance to the families of the deceased. The government has also said that it will take steps to improve the quality of healthcare in government hospitals in the state.
This is a tragic incident and our thoughts are with the families of the deceased. We hope that the government’s investigation will shed light on the cause of death and that steps will be taken to prevent such tragedies from happening in the future.
