On Saturday, South Africa did something really amazing in a cricket tournament called the World Cup. They scored a lot of runs, more than anyone has ever scored in a World Cup match before. A player named Aiden Markram also made a very fast century, which means he scored 100 runs really quickly. This surprised the other team, Sri Lanka.
Before this, the most runs a team had ever scored in a World Cup match was 417, but South Africa scored even more – 428 runs. This is also one of the highest scores ever in any one-day international cricket match.
Aiden Markram scored his century in just 49 balls, which is faster than anyone else has done in a World Cup match. Before him, a player from Ireland named Kevin O’Brien held that record, and he did it in 50 balls.
In this special World Cup match, three players, including Aiden Markram, scored a century, which is a big deal. Rassie van der Dussen and Quinton de Kock were the other two players who reached this milestone.
Rassie van der Dussen said, “We played really well with the bat today. Aiden Markram was fantastic, and it was a great day for us.”
But for Sri Lanka, things were not so good. Their bowlers had a tough time, and two of them gave away a lot of runs.
This incredible performance by South Africa was very different from their last match in October 2022, where they scored only 99 runs.
Quinton de Kock, who was playing in his final international tournament, also scored a century, which was his 18th in one-day cricket. He made 100 runs off 83 balls and had a big partnership with Rassie van der Dussen.
Aiden Markram scored his 100 runs in just 34 balls and hit many fours and sixes. He was eventually caught out after scoring a lot of runs quickly.
In the end, South Africa scored a total of 428 runs, with great performances from Rassie van der Dussen, Aiden Markram, and Quinton de Kock. It was a match that people will remember for a long time.
