October 4, 2023, Lachen Valley, Sikkim: Twenty-three Army jawans are missing after a flash flood hit a camp of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) in the Lachen Valley of Sikkim on Wednesday.

The incident occurred at around 11 pm on Tuesday night after a cloudburst triggered a flash flood in the Teesta River. The BRO camp was located near the river and was swept away by the floodwaters.

A search and rescue operation has been launched by the Army and the NDRF to locate the missing jawans. However, the operation has been hampered by bad weather and difficult terrain.

So far, one body has been recovered and six jawans have been rescued. The search for the remaining 16 jawans is ongoing.

The flash flood in Lachen Valley is a reminder of the dangers of climate change. As the planet warms, extreme weather events such as floods and droughts are becoming more common.
