12506 Train: 4 dead, 70 injured, and 6 Coaches derailed

On Wednesday night, a tragedy occurred when the Delhi-Kamakhya North East Express derailed near Raghunathpur station in Bihar’s Buxar district. Unfortunately, four passengers lost their lives, and around 70 others were injured.

The derailment happened at 9:53 pm, causing six train coaches to go off the tracks. Four of these coaches derailed, while two AC III Tier coaches tipped over, as seen on television.

The Buxar Superintendent of Police, Manish Kumar, confirmed the four casualties, and Railway Police Force officials reported about 70 injured passengers. The seriously injured were taken to AIIMS, Patna.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw expressed condolences for the loss of lives and promised to investigate the cause of the derailment. Evacuation and rescue operations have been completed, and all coaches have been inspected.

The North East Express, with 23 coaches, had started its journey from Anand Vihar terminal in Delhi at 7:40 am for a nearly 33-hour trip to Kamakhya.

Witnesses described the train derailing suddenly, with the AC coaches suffering the most damage. Locals rushed to help passengers from the toppled coaches, and the authorities also joined the rescue efforts.

Some damage to electric wires, poles, and rail tracks occurred due to the accident, but fortunately, none of the coaches overturned. The exact cause of the accident will be determined by a technical team.

Relief efforts were quickly initiated, with ambulances and doctors arriving at the scene. Bihar’s Deputy Chief Minister, Tejashwi Yadav, instructed disaster management and health departments to provide immediate relief to those affected.

Alternative transportation arrangements were made for the derailed train passengers. Buses and a scratch rake, a temporary train, were dispatched to evacuate passengers to safety.

Medical teams were sent to the scene, and emergency helpline numbers were provided. War rooms were set up to monitor and restore the coaches, while rescue operations continued.

As a result of the derailment, around 18 trains on the route, including the Delhi-Dibrugarh Rajdhani Express, had to be diverted.
